Bryant Charles Gumbel was conceived in New Orleans on September 29, 1948. His father Richard Dunbar Gumbel, a judge, and his mother Rhea LeCesne, a clerk. Both of his parents are Louisiana Creole. His surname is derived from his Jewish-German ancestors.
